How 3D Mesh Volume & Print Times Are Calculated
Mathematical physics formulas for volumetric slicing and toolpath calculation:
Signed Divergence & Infill Math
-
Step 1 — Exact 3D Volume (Divergence Theorem):
Volume = Σ (v1 · (v2 × v3)) ÷ 6 over all triangles = 38,400 mm³ = 38.40 cm³
-
Step 2 — Sliced Infill Mass & Weight:
Mass = [Shell Volume (12.2 cm³) + Infill Volume (26.2 cm³ × 20%)] × Density (1.24 g/cm³) = 18.52 grams
-
Step 3 — 1.75mm Filament Length:
Length = Effective Volume (14.94 cm³) ÷ Area of 1.75mm Circle (0.02405 cm²) = 621 cm = 6.21 meters
-
Step 4 — Estimated Print Time:
Print Time = Total Toolpath Distance ÷ Speed (60 mm/s) + Layer Overhead (0.2mm layers) = 1 hour 42 minutes

Frequently Asked Questions About STL Slicing & G-Code
Technical answers for 3D printing hobbyists, engineers, and makers.
Can I convert an STL file to G-code directly in my web browser?
Yes. Our client-side slicer extracts the 3D polygon triangles directly in your browser, computes the bounding geometry, projects layers at your chosen layer height, and generates standard Marlin/Klipper compatible .gcode instructions ready to load on an SD card or OctoPrint.
How is 3D model volume calculated from an STL file?
We use the signed divergence theorem. For each triangle facet in the STL mesh, we compute the volume of the signed tetrahedron formed by the triangle and the origin: Volume = Σ (v1 · (v2 × v3)) ÷ 6. Summing across all facets yields the exact closed volume down to fractions of a cubic millimeter.
How do you calculate filament weight from model volume?
Multiply the effective plastic volume (solid perimeters + infill density) by the specific gravity of the filament. For example, a 15 cm³ effective PLA volume multiplied by 1.24 g/cm³ density equals 18.6 grams of filament.
What standard G-code commands are generated?
The generated G-code includes standard commands: G28 (home all axes), M104/M109 (hotend heating), M140/M190 (bed heating), G92 E0 (reset extruder), G1 movement and extrusion lines, and M84 (turn off motors at completion).
How much does 3D printing filament cost per gram?
At $22 per standard 1-kilogram spool, filament costs approximately $0.022 per gram. Small brackets and adapters typically use 15 to 30 grams of material, costing under $0.70 each to produce.
